What was a great piece in the mid 80's is now unloved and unwanted by most. This big sideboard and hutch was made in Vietnam some 40 years ago by some very talented woodworkers. Long since banished from the house it spent nearly two decades as a candle retail display before ending up in the garage.
All I see it some great potential.
What was unwanted and out of fashion can be rejuvenated with some imagination, effort and a little skill. The sideboard is replete with Australian hardwood base and breadboard counter top is ready to go for another forty years. The frame has been re glued and stiffened and some new shelves made from parts of the old hutch
The old hutch was flipped on its head and became the perfect narrow console table for an entry hall, office or anywhere a shallow cabinet is needed.
Now fitted with Australian hardwood base and breadboard counter. The door glass replaced with vintage rattan.
You don't always need new furniture - sometimes the old stuff can be just right
Underneath the dirt and 9 layers of paint is a quality piece of furniture. This "boarding house" dresser is pre- war antique made from 100% cedar - all of the panels are solid boards. For the last 40 years it lived in a garage. It was in awful shape - the locks were seized with dirt and rust , the frame was wonky, three drawers refused to open - next stop was a roadside council cleanup.
The replacment cost of the cedar timber alone is more $800 - that's if you could find boards as wide as those used.
Stripped back, the frame and drawer boxes re glued, drawers now slide on the century old runners, the brass locks open and close but the scars of its long life are still visible. Out with the cheap flatpack and in with the piece that once sat out the back
A counter made from recycled - but still wonderful Stringy Bark decking put together in a bread board style. Finished with oil and wax
The drawer fronts were from a closed print shop and were once used as storage shelves . So much character that the original green colour formed the basis for the whole piece.
They were cleaned, waxed and left as we found them
